Leg workout and a fresh garden salad…

Finally, finally I was about to enjoy some of the produce out of my garden. It has been a slow going start for my garden this year as the weather could not meet and settle with a nice growing temperature for the little seeds to take hold. Either it was way to chilly or smoking hot, both of which have negative affects on little seeds and seedlings trying to get their start. But yesterday I was able to collect these to have in a fresh salad:

I also added some yellow and red peppers and some tomatoes. Unfortunately, I have never had a long enough growind season to be able to grow peppers and tomatoes are always a touchy thing. My tomato plants so far look as if they have been put through the ringer because of the weather instability so I doubt I will have any fresh garden ones this year. I have been blessed with children that absolutely LOVE spinach and I can’t seem to grow enough of it to keep them satisfied. LOL

So, since I missed another day of gym having taken an unexpected day off, today will be my leg workout day. While browsing leg/glute workout videos, I ran across one called the frog squat using dumbbells. I have been doing this move but with kettle bells and never had an idea what the move was called. Frog squats suit it perfectly! Here is a video on how to do frog squats. They are super effective on glutes, hamstrings and inner thighs. I love them! Jodi over at posted a post yesterday on some super effective leg/butt moves to help out us ladies/men who are working on our derriere areas! I have to admit that I am afraid to try out the smith machine because ( and this will seem silly to some of you) it is in the area of the gym where all the big workout equipment is and where all the BIG, BULKY men are. Now I am not in general afraid of the big, bulky men (some of them are ultra hot!) but, little me trying to use an unfamiliar piece of equipment in this environment is FREAKY! Funny how all the big, huge men seem to congregate to the same area of the gym eh?

Anyways, I am off to pick some more fresh spinach and find a spinach dip recipe to use it in. Any of you have a good spinach dip recipe you would like to share? I love spinach dip and just don’t get enough of it in my diet! LOL

And good news about my kids: my son is doing fine after his roll over. The lady in the other car is also doing fine. You would never know my son just had such a serious accident as he is up and about and everything healed. Just some stitches near his one eye visible. And my daughter is starting to regain her memory. Very exciting to hear her talk about things she had forgotten and she didn’t realize she was now remembering. Good, good days! Haven’t heard anything about my uncle yet but, I am sure everything is going good or my grandmother would have phoned me again.


New veggie…..

On my trip to Costco last week I discovered a veggie? called Edamame in the frozen vegetable section. Since I have heard the word Edamame around alot lately, I decided that this should be a new vegetable experiment in my house. After all, it has been a very long while since we have tried anything new.

I knew absolutely nothing about edamame. I found out that  Edamame is young soybeans, usually still in the pod. Ok, good enough but, I still had no idea. The back of the box said to boil the pods in salted water, or, steam your edamame, then sprinkle with a bit of sea salt. You can eat edamame hot or cold.

Then I found a caution on the box that the pods are NOT edible. Under that, there was instructions on how to eat them. To eat edamame, place the pod at your mouth, then squeeze or bite the beans into your mouth. You don’t eat the pod, just the edamame beans. I thought ‘great, what a pain in the ass to eat veggie. This will go over good with the family because it isn’t bad enough that I am throwing in a foreign food with dinner!’

Well, it turned out that the beans pop out incredible easily into your mouth and it is fun. Fun finger foods. I had a great time eating them and so did my youngest daughter. No comment from hubby but, he did take a bunch of the leftovers for his lunch today. 🙂

How did they taste? I didn’t find that they had very much taste at all, straight out of the pod. But, I still liked them and they would be even better with a little bit of butter and salt.

Nutrition info:  This food is very low in Sodium. It is also a good source of Dietary Fiber (8g/155g serving! wow!), Protein (You get 17g of protein / 155 g serving too.N ice!) , Thiamin, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus and Copper, and a very good source of Vitamin K, Folate and Manganese.   A nutrition table and more info can be found at found at

So all in all, we did enjoy our new veggie experiment and will definitely include edamame in our healthy eating lifestyle. Now to head off and check out some recipe ideas for the edamame.

Where has the time gone?

I can’t believe it has been over a week since I was here last. The time has just been flying by!

Everything has been good this week with me. I did have a day or two where I was having a tough time dealing with the loss of my dad. My hubby finally told my trainer that I have a huge amount of built up anger brewing inside that my trainer is managing to get beat out of my with every workout. So when I went in one day last week in a really pissy, angry mood, and my hubby told my trainer why, he worked it out of me real good! 🙂 I went home in SO much of a better mood and my depression was gone. He ( my trainer) really has turned out to be invaluable. We have been with our trainer for 4 weeks now and really do see a difference in our bodies. As well as our stamina , intensity and moods.

This next week is my week off of work and it will be a full week since my coworker is now back to work from her injury. So I can spend some time focusing on my cardio which I haven’t been having quite enough time to get enough in each day due to time restraints at the gym. That is all good though as it will be a shocker to my body again to up my cardio! 🙂 This week hubby and I are on our own at the gym because our trainer has to go out of town for the week. But, he was so kind as to make sure that we have a schedule of what to do while he is gone. What a guy! 😉

The weather here has been really cool and we are actually expecting some snow in the middle of the week. Can you believe it? May and snow! Yikes! We need the moisture here badly after last year of draught but, I would like to get started on my garden without having to shovel first! LOL I am looking forward to my garden this year for all the fresh produce right at my finger tips. Yum. I really missed having my garden last year.

Sorry for the boring post. Had to get up more than not while writing it so totally lost my train of thought about what I was going to write. Hopefully tomorrows will be better, eh?

What a workout!

So my hubby and I finally made the plunge and hired ourselves a personal trainer. We have never used one before so it is definitely a new and different experience.

He has taken the workout routine that my hubby has been following from a book of his, looked it over and decided that it is a great routine for us to follow with a few tweaks here and there and the odd exercise change. It will also tweak some of the exercises to better suit me and toughen up others for my hubby.

Last night was our first workout with our trainer and let me just say,  ‘It was awesome!!’  We are learning proper technique which absolutely makes a huge difference in how well that exercise works for you. We noticed a difference in how the routine felt last night with proper technique compared to on our own. It was a very exciting and fun workout (and for the girls: not to mention that he is very nice on the eyes! 🙂 ) Every time my free weights would touch, he would make me do two more! LOL Makes you learn balance and control really quickly! LOL 😉 We have another session tomorrow and then will decide on next week. I do know that my hubby would like some one on one with him as well as our couples training.

I have been feeling like crap since my dads passing with all the stress I am under and not eating as well as I should. I have been stress eating and lots of junk to boot so it is very much time to get back to my regular workouts and eating clean. In the past week with my low immune system from stress, I managed to have a very sick day with throwing up and diahrea and now have headache and stuffy sinus. I feel like it is going to be a WHOPPER  of a cold! 😦 I started taking some vitamin supplements and extra vitamin C to help with my immune system and see if I can avoid any more or too much more down time.I haven’t had any runs in about two/three weeks now from lack of energy (from stress, lack of exercise and crappy foods obviously!) so I may need to re-evaluate whether I will be able to run the half at the end of May. Maybe one later in the summer or fall will be better for me right now.

Well, my friend Carla, from My half dozen daily, has been having her green monster smoothies again for breakfast since the weather there has started to warm up. Seeing her lovely pics of her green monsters has influenced me to pull back out my blender and get back into the smoothies myself.

This is my smoothie this morning.

I think that this is the first time that my green monster has actually been green. Usually it is an ugly brown or purple because of the frozen berries I usually put in it. Today though, I skipped the berries and instead used these:

2 handfuls of spinach

a banana

a chopped apple

2 tbs of milled flax

1/3 cup of fat free, sugar free vanilla yogurt

1 cup of skim milk

It was delicious!! A little warmer than I like because I didn’t use ice and didn’t think to use a frozen banana. Delicious none the less. 🙂

I am having a much better day today dad wise. I still felt depressed after opening my eyes this morning and did not want to get up and start my day. But, once up, I felt much better. I think I am coming down with the nasty cold my youngest daughter had last week as I have a headache I can’t get rid of and feel crappy in my sinuses, plus extra tired. That is not good since I am supposed to be starting back to work next week. Ugghhh.

Tough time.

Today is a tough day for me. Ever since waking up. Most mornings for me, when I wake up, feel doomy and gloomy and depressing. I know it is because I have just lost my father but, it is still an awful feeling, one that makes me not want to get up to start the day. A day filled with dealings regarding my dad. I hate it. It is not fair. That he is gone so soon and that I have to go through this. My sister, who lives in another province, is coming here at the end of the month to help to clean out dad’s house. I am not ready! I don’t want to clean out his house, donate his things, make it real that he is gone. But, my sister is a single mom living on a part time job and can’t just come here, on a whim, whenever I am personally ready to let my dad go.  And we still need to spread his ashes, which I need my sister there for. And I still have my mom’s ashes from a year ago that we need to deal with. Is that going to be weird? To spread dad and mom’s ashes on the same day? For sure it will be. But, we don’t know when my sister will be able to get back here. It will be a very hard, emotional time.


On another note, I went to work yesterday for the first time in three weeks. It was nice to see my friends again and talk about dad with them.

The funny thing was that yesterday, everyone noticed my weight loss. I have been losing weight for the past year and a half, almost two years, and yesterday was the first time anyone noticed. My close friends of course have noticed because I would start wearing different sized uniforms and clothes. But yesterday, I had 3 coworkers from different departments stop me in the halls and ask me how much weight I had lost and how I did it. Clean eating and taking up running! I had a lot of comments about how great I am looking. That made me feel really good about the work I have been doing and my success. It helps to keep me motivated and want to continue on this journey to good health I am on. I have joined the Daily Mile site to track my workouts and keep up with my fellow journeyers. Tonight I am going to meet my hubby at the gym after he gets off work and we are going to do our second session of resistance training together. Most of the time my workout with weights will be a home workout but, whenever I can, I will meet up with hubby and work out with him. It is great to see him making healthy choices on his own and doing something about his health.

Weekend Warrior

Well, the Weekend Warrior challenge is at an end. Hopefully everyone did great for the weekend with their goals. Here were my goals for the weekend.

1)exercise for at least 60 mins each Saturday and Sunday.

2)get in my 8 glasses of water—I have been having a lot of trouble getting in even 1!

3)stay away from the JUNK foods.

How did I do?

#1) I didn’t do a lick of exercise on Saturday. Instead, I vegged in bed with hubby watching the Prison Break series. Have never seen it before, not to bad of a show. Sunday was awesome for exercise, went swimming with my family and then for a hour long brisk walk.

#2) Score! I managed to drink 8 glasses on both Saturday and Sunday. My trick was to throw fresh lemon slices in the glass!

#3) Not good on Sat. Had a half bag of potato chips and had processed fish and chips for dinner. Yuck and yum all at the same time! Sunday was awesome for eating, NO junk whatsoever, and lots of veggies!
